String Quartets You Should Know!

For my students, I am accumulating a list of essential artists and ensembles that they need to go listen to, and whose work shaped our art and craft.  Below is a list of the groups that I want my students to know, and whose recordings and performances I have admired and cherished during my journey as a cellist and quartet player.  I'm sure there are groups I'm missing, and welcome your suggestions!  I urge all of my students to go listen to these groups, compare and contrast their styles, and shamelessly adopt as much as you can for your own interpretive journey.
